About Us
The Central Chapter is one of many chapters of the Archeological Society of Maryland that serves as a network for avocational archeologists in Baltimore City and Baltimore and Carroll Counties.
Objectives of the chapter:
In support of these objectives, The Central Chapter sponsors a variety of activities including lectures, field survey and excavations.
The Chapter, which was re-formed in 2014, has a long history since the 1960s of excavation and volunteer work in Baltimore City and Baltimore and Carroll Counties. These projects include the Big Gunpowder Falls Rockshelter Survey, Hampstead Hill Dig, Herring Run Park, Kirby Farm and Civil War Archeology at Lafayette Square.
Objectives of the chapter:
- Discover, investigate and converve archeological resources in Maryland;
- Promote proper recording of arceological sites and materials;
- Respect the fragile and non-renewable nature of archeological sites;
- Create bonds between avocational and professional archeologists;
- Develop opportunities for working with professional archeologists through field work, analysis and reporting;
- Promote public dissemination of information about Maryland's buried heritage;
- Publish results of all excavations undertaken by the chapter.
